Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes the living conditions of the working class in France following the tumultuous revolutionary period of 1848. The author was tasked by the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences to study and report on the social and economic factors impacting the lives of the working class and their effect on the overall social order of France at the time. The author traveled to major industrial centers such as Lille, Lyon, and Rouen, as well as rural areas, to gather firsthand accounts of various working conditions, wage disparities, and living arrangements. The author found that despite the great advances of industrialization, many workers toiled in dangerous and unsanitary conditions within factories. Many survived on meager wages that were subject to arbitrary deductions and unfair fines. In addition, the author observed that industrial work led to a devaluing of traditional skills and social bonds, as well as the exploitation of women and children in the workforce. Analyzing these conditions through an economic and sociological lens, the author concludes that the negative effects of industrialization on the working class were not inevitable consequences of progress but rather the result of a failure on the part of industrialists to recognize the humanity of their workers and society's responsibility to protect the most vulnerable.
