The 120 full-page photographs in this book depict people at country fairs, rodeos, mining camps, drilling sites, and even a slaughterhouse - men and women of the American West who work at hard, everyday jobs. Richard Avedon introduces the volume with an essay on his working method and portrait philosophy, and Laura Wilson, who accompanied Avedon and his team, provides a journal of their travels, between 1979 and 1984.

First edition and first printing. Hardcover. One of Avedon's best and most cohesive book, a look at "regular" people. Avedon traveled extensively taking a portable studio with him to and photograph his subjects in front of a white background which resulted in stark and striped down images. Features background text by Laura Wilson. A very good copy in cloth boards with black and white plates affixed to the front and rear covers, some slight sunning to the spine and with some foxing as well. No dust jacket. Despite the minor flaws a solid copy of this classic. (Parr & Badger v2, p38). Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 205450

Hardcover. First edition. Folio. Regarded as a project in photographic history and an expression of the power of photographic art, this book was first published by Thames & Hudson in 1985. In the American West was a landmark in the career of New York photographer Richard Avedon and in the history of photography. It consisted of a series of larger-than-life black-and-white portraits of men and women living in rural America, posing in front of an immaculate white background and gazing intently at the camera. Instead of playing to the traditional myth of the openness and grandeur of the West as the title might imply, Avedon had focused his camera on people who were the antithesis of that myth: miners, housewives, farmers, and drifters. The large prints were mounted onto aluminum and exhibited without glazing, which intensified the gaze of the sitters. Unveiled in 1985 at the Amon Carter Museum, which had commissioned the project, the work was acclaimed and criticized with equal fervor. This paper focuses on the materials employed and the aesthetic choices made by the artist for the printing, mounting, and display of the photographs, and their impact on the long-term preservation of the work. A near fine copy in photo illustrated cloth in the original glassine jacket. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 14830
