Der Ruhm, der Raffaels Gemälde heute umgibt, war aber nicht selbstverständlich. Das Buch verfolgt die Geschichte der »Sixtinische Madonna« von ihrer Entstehung bis zur Gegenwart. Raffael schuf das Altarbild um 1512-13 wahrscheinlich im Auftrag des Papstes, dann hing es 250 Jahre fast unbemerkt in einer Klosterkirche in Oberitalien. Erst mit dem Ankauf des Bildes durch August III. und die komplizierten, oftmals vom Scheitern bedrohten Ankaufsverhandlungen begann seine eigentliche Entdeckung. Auch der Mythos des Gemäldes wird untersucht. Die Vertreter der Romantik legten um 1800 den Grundstein für die Popularität des Werks. Und gleichzeitig entwickelten auch die Engelchen ein Eigenleben, das sie durch alle Höhen und Tiefen des guten Geschmacks führen sollte.
