In the many buildings he created all over the world, Hundertwasser sought to harmonize architecture with the needs of both man and nature. He was radically opposed to functional architecture, straight lines and grids. His buildings are organic and flamboyantly ornamental, their roofs and facades embellished with trees and shrubs. It all started in 1979 with a subsidized municipal housing project that would soon become world-famous as the Hundertwasser House, but which is more properly known as the Hundertwasser-Krawina House, reflecting the painter's collaboration with the architect Josef Krawina. Krawina's role is documented in a permanent exhibition in the visitor's information center. This book is the first to tell the real story of how such a remarkable apartment building came into being. The photographs for the book were taken over the years and show a constantly evolving Hundertwasser-Krawina House from a variety of different angles. As the building is not open to the public, photographs are the only way for most non-residents to view the strikingly designed interior. The photographs illustrate how Hundertwasser translated his principles for building and living in harmony with man and nature into practice, not only in the pioneering Hundertwasser-Krawina House but in all his subsequent design projects both in Austria and abroad."
