Original Wraps. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Limited Edition. Signed limited edition #3/100 - folded once. One of just 100 copies printed - all signed by Joseph Conrad in ink on the front cover title page. This was a privately printed edition of Conrad's Preface to his wife Jessie's cookbook, which was printed before the cookbook's actual publication. ***Please note that this rare pamphlet has been folded once as it was kept by a previous owner as a bookmark in their copy of Joseph Conrad's "Some Reminiscences"! (also listed on ABE). ***An original paper pamphlet, consisting of two folded sheets with a front page title and four internal printed pages, in very good condition. The lower edge of the pages is lightly creased and, as previously mentioned, the original owner has folded the pamphlet across the middle and used the pamphlet as a bookmark! This has, however, had the unintentional benefit of preserving Joseph Conrad's signature with the ink completely unfaded. Uncommon thus. ***Jessie Conrad's "A Handbook of Cookery for a Small House" was published by William Heinemann in 1923, and incorporated Joseph Conrad's preface. ***'On 24 March 1896 Conrad married an Englishwoman, Jessie George. The couple had two sons, Borys and John. The elder, Borys, proved a disappointment in scholarship and integrity. Jessie was an unsophisticated, working-class girl, sixteen years younger than Conrad. To his friends, she was an inexplicable choice of wife, and the subject of some rather disparaging and unkind remarks. However, according to other biographers such as Frederick Karl, Jessie provided what Conrad needed, namely a "straightforward, devoted, quite competent" companion. Similarly, Jones remarks that, despite whatever difficulties the marriage endured, "there can be no doubt that the relationship sustained Conrad's career as a writer", which might have been much less successful without her."' (Wiki) ***A rare surviving example of this privately printed pamphlet, published in a limited edition of just 100 copies - this copy being a very early numbered example #3/100, and signed by Joseph Conrad in fountain-pen ink, A very scarce item for the Joseph Conrad collector. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
