In a first state supplied dust-jacket with the correct price of 8s. 6.d to front flap. Boldly signed by Agatha Christie in her inimitable hand to the front free endpaper. A tale of family intrigue set in the immediate post-war years' as Hercule Poirot is called upon to untangle the mystery of a missing husband, a glamorous widow and the true heir to the Cloade family fortune. The verso of the front free endpaper has the small and neat ownership signature of one 'L (?) Gordon Clark, who may very well be the noted director, screenwriter and author who directed the short TV film 'Murder by the Book' about Agatha Christie attempting to kill off her most famous detective. Octavo, bound in full morocco by the Harcourt Bindery, gilt titles and tooling to the spine in compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt ruling to the front and rear panels, gilt inner dentelles stamp-signed by the Harcourt Bindery, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. In fine condition. An exceptional presentation. Agatha Christie was an English writer and known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, particularly those revolving around her fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Christie also wrote the world's longest-running play, a murder mystery, The Mousetrap, and six romances under the name Mary Westmacott. In 1971 she was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for her contribution to literature. She was initially an unsuccessful writer with six rejections, but this changed when The Mysterious Affair at Styles, featuring Hercule Poirot, was published in 1920. During the Second World War she worked as a pharmacy assistant at University College Hospital, London, during the Blitz and acquired a good knowledge of poisons which featured in many of her subsequent novels. Guinness World Records lists Christie as the best-selling novelist of all time. Her novels have sold roughly 2 billion copies, and her estate claims that her works come third in the rankings of the world's most-widely published books, behind only Shakespeare's works and the Bible. According to Index Translationum, she remains the most-translated individual author â" having been translated into at least 103 languages. And Then There Were None is Christie's best-selling novel, with 100 million sales to date, making it the world's best-selling mystery ever, and one of the best-selling books of all time.

Housed in a custom clamshell box by the Harcourt Bindery. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed. One of Christie's favorites among her works, Endless Night was first published in the U.K. by the Collins Crime Club on October 30, 1967 and in the U.S. by Dodd, Mead and Company the following year. The work received some of the warmest critical reviews of Christies career upon publication. "The old maestrina of the crime-novel (or whatever is the female of 'maestro') pulls yet another out of her inexhaustible bag with Endless Night, quite different in tone from her usual work. It is impossible to say much about the story without giving away vital secrets: sufficient to warn the reader that if he should think this is a romance he couldn't be more mistaken, and the crashing, not to say horrific suspense at the end is perhaps the most devastating that this surpriseful author has ever brought off" (Francis Iles, The Guardian).

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. 1st Edition. Agatha Christie (1933) 'The Hound of Death', UK first edition, first printing, published by Odhams Press. Together with and original handwritten and signed letter addressed to film director Lionel Jeffries with superb content (see below). The Hound of Death is a short story collection which includes the story 'The Witness for the Prosecution' mentioned in the letter. The letter: on Winterbrook House stationary one sheet, folded in half creating four pages. On three pages, dated 20th May [1971], "from Dame Agatha Christie" in hand on top: "Dear Mr Jeffries | I have wanted to| wite to you for some time | because of the enormous | pleasure that the film of | The Railway Children gave | me It was my | favourite book as a child | & up to the age of 24 at | least I still used to occasionaly | to read it | I dreaded going to see | the film because nearly | always films of ones | favourite books are a | disastous disappointment | But this was so perfectly | produced & acted | I gather you are the | person I thank for the | great pleasure it gave me | Except for the Witness | for the Prosecution which | was good, all the films | that have been made from my | stories & books I have | hated! | Thank you again I | hope this reaches you, but | I am a little uncertain | about the address | Yours sincerely | Agatha Christie Mallowan" A scarce and beautiful letter with superb content in which Christie reveals that she hated all of the film and TV- adaptations of her work bar Witness for the Prosecution (1957 starring Marlene Dietrich in the Billy Wilder film). The Hound of Death (1933) is a short-story collection which contains the story Witness for the Prosecution which has been adapted several times for the TV and cinema including the above-mentioned version. Lionel Jeffries (1926-2010) was an actor and film director. His adaptation of Railway Children, based on the famous E. Nesbit novel (1906) was released in December 1970, so Christie's letter was most likely written in 1971. Condition of the book: a very good copy in like dust jacket. The book bears no previous owners' scribbles, no stamps and no bookplates. A few typical faint foxing spots but no heavy foxing as other copies often display. The boards are rubbed in places with dust soiling as shown. The spine is faded but has not gobne completely pale as with most copies. The dust jacket has a few tears and light edge wear. However, no slarge sections are missing as with the majority of specimen found. A nice copy. First and Fine. Signed by Author(s).

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Agatha Christie (1922) 'The Secret Adversary', UK first edition, first printing, published by The Bodley Head. Accompanied by an original typed letter signed by Christie as Agatha Mallowan. The book: in very good condition and well preserved for a book from 1922. There are no previous owner's scribbles, no names, no bookplates, no stamps. The lettering on the spine is clearly legible and not rubbed out. The front board's ornaments are there with just a little rubbing. Rear board is clean. Usual shelf wear to edges. Page block edges not foxed, toned commensurate with age. Internally faint foxing spots here and there such as on our sample image of page 55. The original dust jacket is not present. However, we do provide a facsimile dust jacket which presents and protects the book on the shelf nicely. Those early Christie original dust jackets are exceptionally scarce and add considerable sums to the price. The letter: one page, 8vo, on Christie's stationary paper with 'Winterbrook House' header, dated 18th February 1972 [exactly fifty years after The Secret Adversary's publication in 1922]. In the letter to John Higgins, Christie counts that by then she had published 81 books, the same number as her age. She further says that she know nothing about the exact number of sales, but notes that they increase every year. She signs as Agatha Mallowan. John Dalby Higgins (1934-1999) was a journalist and Arts Editor for The Times (1970-1988). In 1972 he asked Christie whether she would be willing to serve a judge for a Times short story competition to which Christie agreed. Higgins needed from Christie some background information to introduce her to the readership. Hence, this letter. In fine condition with two paperclip indentations to the top left corner as shown. The Secret Adversary is Dame Agatha Christie's second novel only preceeded by The Mysterious Affair at Styles (1921). It was received well upon publication. A first German film adaptation followed in 1929 (silent film called Die Abenteurer G.m.b.H.). A TV adaptation follows in 1983 and as recently as 2014 produced by the BBC. First and Fine. In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing of 'Curtain'. Published by Collins Crime Club in London, 1975. This is a very good copy. The dust wrapper has some mild surface scratches and some slight bumping at the corners. It has been price clipped. The boards are free from notable wear and are sharp at the corners. The internals are clean, free from inscriptions. With signed bookplate of David Suchet attached to the front endpaper. Overall, this is a very good copy of a good title. Poirot and Hastings come full circle at Styles, and there is still one case for Poirot to solve. Who is the serial killer X?
