The petitions were made to King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette by French army officer Edme-Louis Desbans to secure a lieutentant officer position; they are decorated with elaborate pen and wash drawings by Gabriel de Saint-Aubin, the artist perhaps best known for his amazing contemporary hand drawings of works of art in the catalogues of the Paris art salons and auction houses. The text for the four volumes in the series was published between 1781 and 1786; the plates were issued in livraisons from March 1778 onwards.JIoli Vingopoulou: Jean-Claude Richard, abbé de Saint-Non (1727-1791) was a French clergyman, engraver and painter. He was exiled from Paris for political reasons and lived from then onwards in Poitiers. EventuAlly, he made the choice to devote himself to his artistic interests (art, archaeology and music), and thus resigned from his public office as a judge. After 1759 Saint-Non lived in England for some time, and later moved to Italy (1759-1761). He traveled to Naples and Sicily with painter Fragonard and H. Robert. He released first his drawings of the monuments of Rome, which soon won over the public; thus, in 1777 he was able to publish his account and drawings of the ?enchanting? journey to Magna Graecia. AN UNRECORDED ISSUE, with an additional section devoted to the founding of the Academie Royale d'Ecriture. This section comprises 5 text pages not described in recorded editions and a full-page plate by Defehrt after Monnet (an allegory of writing). Printed on very fine, thick laid paper with ample margins. The impressions of the etchings are outstanding. 4to. Bound in quarter calf and decorated boards.
