Facsimile reprint of the 1929 edition published by the Cresset Press Ltd, London. Hardback. xxxii, 123pp. Green boards with gilt hawk design to front and gilt to spine. Top edge tinted green. Dust jacket. In 1686, Richard Blome (a somewhat notorious character) raised sufficient subscriptions to publish his "The Gentleman's Recreation". the first part of this publication was an encyclopaedia of the arts and sciences, the second treated Horsemanship, Hawking, Hunting, Rowling, Fishing and Agriculture, with a short treatise on cockfighting. The second part was lifted almost entirely from a translation of Les Ruses Innocentes and from the works of Markham and Turberville. From this compendium has been extracted the piece on Hawking, together with an interesting article on the taking of birds including hawks with an eagle owl. The scope of this extract is covered by a typically generous subheading, 'wherein is treated of the several kinds of Hawks now in use with their natures and qualities. The manner of reclaiming, mewing and flying them. Their diseases and cures. With a short discourse of the spaniel showing his use in Falconry.' This book represents a welcome reappearance of this scarce treatise on seventeenth-century hawking, with its fine copper engravings. Although it is a massive piece of plagiarism, the original scholarship is sufficiently sound to justify its reissue in this form. Black & white copper engravings plus a fold-out illustration at front. Book condition very good. Minor wear only and some very slight soiling to text block edges. Faintly musty odour but no sign of any damp damage. Dust jacket very good. Price clipped and with some minor edge wear and some very light soiling. Very small crease to corner of rear flap. Jacket in a protective sleeve. Book.

Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Richard Blome (illustrator). A detailed map from the late early 18th Century. Single sided, verso is blank. Old horizontal folds as issued. Approx. 240 X 165mm (9.5 x 6.5 Inches) plus margins. Margin tight top and bottom. Background Information: Taylor was also responsible for the publication of several maps including England exactly described [.] in 1715 containing maps of the English counties which had been issued previously in Speed's Maps Epitomiz'd in 1681 and in other works. The maps seem to have been printed from copper plates made by Richard Blome in the 1660s and 1670s. The plates were modified, and Bloom's name was removed from many of the plates before this set of maps was printed at a later date. We believe it to be from Richard Blome's Britannia (London: 1673) or 38 old maps of England folded and bound in a leather book. This appears to be from England Exactly Described published by Thomas Taylor in 1715. REF: WikiMedia Commons; OCLC 79567206 ; National Library of Wales.

Le Grand was a French Recollect and Cartesian philosopher. Born in Douai, Spanish Netherlands, he was attached at an early age to the English community of St. Bonaventure's convent there, and became a Franciscan Recollect friar, and taught philosophy and divinity. Sent on the English mission, he resided for many years in Oxfordshire, and in 1695 he was tutor in the family of Henry Fermor of Tusmore. His advocacy of Cartesianism met with strong resistance from Samuel Parker, who would become bishop of Oxford.[1] Towards the close of his life he engaged in sharp controversies on metaphysical topics with John Sergeant, a secular priest. At the twenty-third chapter of his order, assembled in London on 9 July 1693, he was elected provincial, and he held that office till his death on 9 August 1699. He lived a studious and retired life. He is noted for the effort he made to render the approach of Descartes more apparently scholastic, to improve its reception with traditionalists. (see Wiki).

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is an extensive exploration of the history and beliefs of radical Protestant religious movements, particularly Anabaptists and Quakers. The author delves into the origins, practices, and persecutions faced by these groups, providing a comprehensive understanding of their place within the broader religious landscape of the early modern period. Through detailed accounts of their doctrines, rituals, and social impact, the book sheds light on the complex interplay between religion, politics, and society in Europe and North America. By examining the evolution of these movements, the author offers valuable insights into the nature of religious dissent and the challenges posed by religious diversity in the face of established authorities. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
