Second edition [possibly third]. Large, thick octavo, pp cll, 972.This is copy #61 of 100 numbered copies on special paper from a Limited Edition of 750. The extensive introduction by Lino Canedo, OFM, provides a comprehensive overview of the author and his achievements. First published in 1746, the original is quite rare: it was brought up to date by Fr. Arricivita in 1798, also rare. Espinosa spent some years in Texas as a Franciscan missionary, founding 3 missions, as well as being Guardian of the Colege of Propaganda Fide in Queretaro, which was the virtual center of all Franciscan missionary work in the Southwest. He also wrote a biography of his colleague Antonio Margil. Beristain (Biblioteca Hispano-Americano) describes him as a second Julius Caesar, fighting battles during the day - spiritual battles - and writing at night. Palau 82708 lists another title which which might be this book, though with a different title: printed in Mexico City, 1899, in an edition of only 100 copies. Bound in full marbled leather with raised bands and red morocco spine labels with gilt rules and titles. Profusely illustrated. Fine.

Second edition. Large, thick 8vo, pp cii, 972. Illustrated with b/w photos of maps, title pages and portraits. Limited to 750 copies, of which 100 are in special paper and numbered, of which latter this is copy #39. The first edition was 1746. Espinosa was a native of Queretaro, joined the Franciscans, and became the historian of his "college", or religious province, which had foundations throughout Mexico and Guatemala. Fr. Antonio Margil is discussed at great length; Espinosa knew Margil and wrote an important biography of this apostle of Texas and Guatemala. Beristain [ii:240] whimsically calls him "el Julio Cesar del Evangelio en la Nueva Espana , pues como aquel romano, de dia peleaba, aunque mejores batallas, y de noche escribia." Splendidly bound in full Spanish marbled calf, raised bands, red morocco title lables. Fine copy.
