Count Gobineau is best known for his 1848 work " An Essay on the Inequality of the Human Races" admired by white supremacist, pro-slavery Americans like Josiah C. Nott and Henry Hotze, A. C. Cuza, Richard Wagner and later the Nazi Party. Gobinism was a movement formed by his anti-Semitic and racist writings. These are plays about the Renaissance figures. The bookplate is of Charles Elliott Perkins [Jr.] & Leita Amory Perkins. Perkins was a president of several railway companies and hailed from Burlington and Chicago eventually living in Solvang, CA. He was also an author of several Westerns one of which, "The Pinto Horse" was praised by Owen Wister.
