In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 4to. Sixth edition. Leipsic, Friedrich Volckmar. London:-At the Agency of the German Literary Society, 32, Nicholas Lane, Lombard Street. Original pinkish-coloured boards with title within an ornate border. Lower cover has a similar border with vignette in centre of a father, seated, reading a letter to his wife and three children. 24 pages, all hand coloured. Across the top of the title page is written, in a contemporary hand: 'Harriette Neilson from her loving Mammy 1855' Condition: original boards have become detached and been neatly sewn back on. A piece of pink linen has been put over the spine, overlapping the front and back covers by about half an inch. This has been covered with some white linen, now a little soiled. These repairs were almost certainly carried out in the 19thC. Covers are lightly soiled. Lacking front and rear endpapers. The pages have some very mild finger marks but they are exceptionally clean and bright and there are no tears. These are the earliest state of the illustrations and later printings had significant differences to Peter, Harriet and the Matches, Little Suck-A-Thumb and most of the other characters. Struwwelpeter was a hugely important and successful children's book. The large page size, style of the drawings and the fact that the book went through scores of editions meant it had a major influence on authors, artists and publishers of English children's literature. First published in English in 1848, early copies in anything like collectable condition are very rare. See Opie and Alderson, Treasures of Childhood p106 for an illustration of Peter as he appears in our book, although the colours in ours are much bolder. Our copy has faults, but it is an exceptionally nice example of a book that almost always turns up in absolutely dreadful condition.

In den WarenkorbZustand: Very Good. Heinrich Hoffman (illustrator). Fourth Edition. Published by Friedrich Volckmar, Leipsic. 24 pages printed and hand-coloured on rectos only. Original printed paper-covered boards. Quarto. Fourth English edition. The Leipzig stamp on the cover is dated 1846, but printed Circa 1850.Bound in original covers with loss of some of the printed paper surface mainly around edges and corners; the paper on the covers are generally cracked and rubbed; new linen spine. Some spotting and soiling internally, some old tears have been repaired and page edges strengthened.; One very large tear on page one repaired; pages 23 and 24 have had smaller tears repaired. Pages but generally good and, overall, an acceptable copy of a very early edition. Originally published in Germany in 1845 as Lustige Geschichten und drollige Bilder, with only 15 pages, the book was expanded and renamed Struwwelpeter in 1847. Hoffmann instructed his publishers to issue the book in strong boards but with a frail paper spine, hoping that children would quickly read the book to pieces, and parents be forced to buy another copy; this accounts for the dearth of copies surviving in original boards. As with all genuine copies of early printings, the government's tax stamp appears on the upper board. The book was first published in English in 1848. After about 1859 the illustrations were changed to show Struwwelpeter with a mop of wavy hair, none of it over his face, as found in the English reprints of today.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: very good. From the perspective of today's pedagogy, this German literature is accused of promoting repression and hostility. Repressive children's literature such as the "Struwwelpeter" by Heinrich Hoffmann, represents childish bad habits and their evil consequences in the countless, moral tales published in the early 19th century. Its textual and pictorial design is so unique and concise that it created a genre. The "Struwwelpetriaden," sadistic imagination of Hoffmann is being criticized today, as a tool that helped children be deformed into fearful, uptight German subjects. In fact, its popularity grew since it was used as a "parenting aid" in Germany and Austria during and after World War II. At a time when the housing was particularly cramped by city bombing, when in most families, mothers alone had to bear the burden of educating the children while men served in the military. The moral pedagogical character of the "Struwwelpeter" may explain its success with adults and its lasting success in general. Not dated, circa 1940, age-toned covers, pages darkened. book.

In den WarenkorbWith wood-engraved colored illustrations and text. Includes the extra leaf for the 100th edition of Wie der Struwwelpeter reprinted from Gartenlaube, 1871, No. 46, with a portrait of Hoffmann. Original decorated wood engraved boards listing all the individual episodes on the front cover and publisher's advertisements on the back cover. The 100th edition was published as a jubilee edition, and all subsequent editions contain the additional leaf at the beginning. This is the famous group of stories of children who are not good, do not listen to their parents, and therefore suffer the results, often drastic consequences, of their cruel mischief. One story tells of a child who tortures animals receiving a deep bite, another receives burns when playing with matches, another is carried off in the wind while playing with an umbrella, never to return. There are children who cut off a thumb from playing with scissors and another who refuses to eat his soup and starves to death. Each of these stories has been related to psychiatric conditions. Each story has its symbols for a variety of mental problems such as ADHD or hyperactivity syndrome. The boy who refuses to eat has been described as suffering from anorexia nervosa. Hoffmann was a Frankfurt doctor and psychiatrist. This book is one of the most successful German children's books and has been translated into numerous languages.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. French translation (1880s?), with hand coloured illustrations throughout. Moderate dustiness and browning to paper covered boards particularly on the front, which has a few small faint stains. Rear board is decorated with adverts to other publications, the front board copies the title page and is also hand coloured. Red cloth spine. The end papers are particularly fragile, the front hinge is cracked and the front free endpaper has torn away a little from the staples but is still fully attached. Very good. Acquired from Maud Lloyd, an admired leading dancer with Ballet Rambert in the 1930s. Later she wrote, with her husband, Nigel Gosling, influential dance books and reviews under the pseudonym, 'Alexander Bland'. When Rudolph Nureyev defected in 1961, they became his surrogate parents.

A beautiful Special Limited edition/ first printing in Fine condition, being # 1436 of only 1500 made for the members of The Limited editions Club in 1935. Printed on French-folded sheets. Decorative cloth, red morocco shelfback (BAL #3555) Illustrations are very bright, pages show only very little browning. While the original navy cloth slipcover shows considerable wear and tear with bumped corners and spine pulling away from boards, the book itself is exceptionally collectible and scarce in this condition; In the foreword of this limited edition, Twain's daughter Clara explains the circumstances under which her father decided to translate into English the classic German children's book Der Struwwelpeter. Twain was intrigued by the jingles and illustrations about unruly children penned by general practitioner Dr. Heinrich Hoffmann and decided to very loosely "Americanize" the antics of the thumbsucking boy and the match playing little girl. Both Dr. Hoffmann and Twain recognized the dark side of childhood that only another child, whether German or American, can recognize. Basis for Off-Broadway play titled "Shock Headed Peter" in 2003; 4to.
