Wilhelm Heinrich Otto Dix was a German painter and printmaker, noted for his ruthless and harshly realistic depictions of German society during the Weimar Republic and the brutality of war. Along with George Grosz and Max Beckmann, he is widely considered one of the most important artists of the Neue Sachlichkeit.The images reproduced here are based largely on Dix's memories, and represent an unflinching account of the horror and perversity of war. Many picture the aftermath of battle: dying, dead, or decomposing bodies, shell-shocked soldiers, and bombed-out landscapes. The artist exploited the corrosive nature of etching and aquatint mediums in which acid etches a metal printing plate to heighten the sense of decay. Dix had served as a machine gunner from 1914 to 1918 and saw combat on both the Eastern and Western fronts.

Esemplare in ottimo stato di conservazione (minimi restauri professionali al dorso a fermare contenute lacerazioni, strappetto non deturpante al piede della cerniera anteriore), fresco e pulito, pregiato dall'iconica firma autografa dell'artista sul frontespizio. Volontario durante la prima guerra mondiale, che lo vide impegnato sia sul fronte orientale sia sul fronte occidentale, ferito e decorato per il suo valore, Otto Dix uscì dalla drammatica esperienza bellica profondamente traumatizzato, come testimoniano in modo tragico e straordinario le cinquanta incisioni contenute nel portfolio «Der Krieg» pubblicate a Berlino da Karl Nierendorf nel 1924 in soli settanta esemplari. Nello stesso anno, Nierendorf diede alle stampe anche una tiratura commerciale a cui appartiene il volume qui presentato del ciclo «Der Krieg», contenente la riproduzione in formato ridotto delle tavole originarie. Come Francisco Goya con le sue 82 incisioni appartenenti al ciclo «Los desastres de la guerra» ha sottratto una delle più importanti e sanguinose pagine delle guerre napoleoniche dalla storia dei conflitti per consegnarla, attraverso immagini vive e terribili, alla più vasta storia delle atrocità umane (e alla storia dell'arte), così Otto Dix con «Der Krieg» ha lasciato indelebile, visionaria e feroce traccia della Prima guerra mondiale. -- Pubblicata in pieno periodo weimariano, quest'opera mostra una chiara volontà di ricordare a una Germania già attraversata da nuove, pericolose, fantasie di rivalsa, vendetta e distruzione, ciò che la guerra, fuori da qualunque mitologia, realmente è.
