Der norwegische Polarforscher R. Amundsen (1872-1928, verschollen), durchsegelte von 1903-1906 mit der für diese Passage umgebauten Jacht "Gjöa" als erster die sogenannte Nordwestpassage. Diese Expedition, bei der die Lage des magnetischen Nordpols bestimmt wurde, gehört zu den herausragendsten Polarreisen. Amundsens Mannschaft erreichte am 14.12.1911 auch als erste den Südpol und gewann damit den Wettlauf gegen den Briten Robert Scott. 1926 überflog Amundsen gemeinsam mit Umberto Nobile und Lincoln Ellsworth im Luftschiff "Norge" den Nordpol. Beim Flug zur Rettung Nobiles (Havarie des Luftschiffes "Italia") aus dem arktischen Eis stürzte er 1928 ab und blieb verschollen.

Kein besonders schönes Exemplar, aber komplett.

Tiny red dot to the spine from some errant paint. Mild edgewear to the first folding map. Internally clean and an attractive copy. The German edition of Arctic Bibliography 402[The "Northwest Passage".]. Amundsen's first great adventure, for which he had to leave Norway in the dead of the night to avoid creditors, who wanted to seize his ship. The GJOA was the first vessel to transit the northwest passage, and the accomplishment brought fame to Amundsen and gave him the resources to mount his successful 1910-12 South Pole expedition.
