Alexandre Moreau de Jonnès est considéré comme le père de la statistique française. Il fut chargé à partir de 1833, par Adolphe Thiers de compiler, pour le ministère de l'Intérieur, l'ensemble de la statistique française, sous la dénomination de Statistique générale du royaume. En outre, il fut l'initiateur de la statistique appliquée à l'agriculture et à l'industrie française. On lui doit également des statistiques économique de la Grande-Bretagne et de l'Irlande, et de l'Espagne, et des travaux statistiques sur l'Antiquités et "sur l'esclavage colonial et sur les moyens de le supprimer". "La statistique est la Science des Faits sociaux, exprimés par des termes numériques. Elle a pour objet la connaissance approfondie de la société, considérée dans ses éléments, son économie, sa situation et ses mouvements. Elle a pour langage celui des chiffres, qui ne lui est pas moins essentiel que les figures à la géométrie et les signes à l'algèbre. Elle procède constamment par des nombres, ce qui lui donne le caractère de précision et de certitude des sciences exactes". (page 1).
