In den Warenkorb2., verb. und sehr verm. Aufl. 8°. VIII, 551 S. mit 1 mont. Orig-Photographie (Albuminabzug, 15,3 x 11,5 cm.) von Maull & Polyblank, Abzug von (Carl Johann Sigmund) Buchner u. 1 gefalt. lithogr. Tafel. Dunkelgrüner Leinenband der Zeit mit goldgepr. Rückentitel. Freeman 673. Heidtmann, Wie das Photo ins Buch kam 267, 511. Vgl. Hirsch/Hüb. II, 187 u. Carter/Muir, PMM 344 b. - Sehr seltene zweite deutsche Ausgabe, die einzige Ausgabe eines Werkes von Darwin mit einer Original-Portraitphotographie. Die 3. u. 4. Aufl. enthalten Darwins Porträt in Stahlstich, spätere Auflagen in Lichtdruck. Maull & Polyblank veröffentlichten 1859 "Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities. . With biographical Notices by E. Walford" mit 40 Albumin-Abzügen (vgl. The Truthful Lens 212, 116). - St.a.T., die ersten und letzten Bl. etwas braunfleckig, sehr gutes Exemplar. - Very rare second German edition, the only edition of a work by Darwin with an original portrait photograph. The 3rd and 4th editions contain Darwin's portrait in steel engraving, later editions in collotype. Translated by the important paleontologist H. G. Bronn (1800-1862), who "despite the difference of opinion, was the first to correctly assess the eminent importance of Darwin's book and to give it the widest and quickest distribution in an excellent translation, thereby contributing not a little to the rapid victory of the theory" (ADB III, 360). - The Stuttgart portrait painter and photographer C. Buchner (1821-1918) is listed as the photographer on the print, but he only made the prints of the earlier photograph. - Buchner, was the younger brother of the portrait and history painter Johann Georg Buchner (1815-1857) and provided him with photographic portraits as models. Buchner had been working in Stuttgart since 1854 and was appointed court painter and court photographer of the Kingdom of Württemberg in 1885. - According to various sources, the portrait of Darwin by Henry Maull (1829-1914) was taken either in 1854 (Darwin at the age of 45) or 1859 or 1860 (Darwin at the age of 51). Since a similar photograph of Darwin by Maull is known, about which Darwin made a critical comment in a letter dated May 27, 1855, the date of 1854 is more likely. - The British photographer H. Maull founded a photographic studio in London together with George Henry Polyblank in 1854 and traded as Maull & Polyblank until 1865, as Maull, Henry & Co. or Maull & Co. from 1866 to 1878 and as Maull & Fox from 1879 to 1885. H. Maull, who portrayed numerous prominent personalities, had been a member of the Royal Photographic Society since 1870. In 1859 Maull & Polyblank published "Photographic Portraits of Living Celebrities. . With biographical Notices by E. Walford" with 40 albumen prints (cf. The Truthful Lens 212, 116). - Stamp on titlepage, first and last leaves somewhat brownstained, very good copy. Sprache: deutsch.

In den WarenkorbBoards. Zustand: Very Good. VIII, 551, [1] (blank) pages. Plus original albumen photograph of Darwin mounted on thin board inserted before the half title (with original tissue guard still present). 8vo. 1/4 leather gilt over marbled boards. Light overall wear to the binding. Bookseller ticket (LW Schmidt, New York, German Bookseller) on front pastedown. Lightly browned pages, clean internally. A nice copy. Boards. The first German translation of Darwin's "Origin of the Species" was published in 1860 by the same publisher. This edition is notable for the inclusion of an albumen frontispiece of Darwin, a very early portrait. Van Wyhe's Complete Photographs of Darwin identifies this portrait as a sitting by Maull & Polyblank from 1857. This image is identified as a variant of that image, "1.1. Albumen photograph, 15.3x11.5cm, uncropped, mounted on thick paper. Below image "Phothogr. v. Buchner / Charles Darwin. / E. Schweitzerbart'sche Verlagshandlung in Stuttgart." Frontispiece to Origin 2d ed. [in German] (1863, F673)." If not the first, it was certainly among the first albumen images of Darwin to be published in a book. A nice addition to any Darwin collection. The albumen print is by Carl Johann Sigmund Buchner. Literature: Freeman, Bibliographical Handlist 2nd edition, #673 Van Wyhe's Complete Photographs of Darwin.

Small stamp and previous owner signature to title page. Leather on lower part of spine with a tear and part detached. Hinges weak but book-block firmly attached. VIII (including half, 520, (6) pp + 1 plate. The very scarce first edition of the highly important first German translation, which appeared just months after the original. This translation came to play a tremendous role in the spreading of Darwinism in Germany and Northern Europe in general. It was through this translation that Darwinian thought reached most of the German scientists and thinkers of the period, and it was this translation that challenged German scholars to think in new ways about morphology, systematics, paleontology, and other biological disciplines. It was from this translation that Ernst Haeckel, Darwin's most famous nineteenth-century proponent and popularizer in Germany, got his Darwinism and was able to further spread the new ideas in his own country. The German translation of Darwin's "The Origin of Species" appeared in 1860, just months after the original, thanks to Heinrich Georg Bronn, a distinguished German paleontologist whose work in some ways paralleled Darwin's. Bronn's version of the book (with his own notes and commentary appended) did much to determine how Darwin's theory was understood and applied by German biologists, for the translation process involved more than the mere substitution of German words for English."Its [Origin of Species] greatest impact on German biological practice lay in the introduction of historical modes of explanation for the observable phenomena of living nature. The historical approach to nature was rejected, not only by the opponents of evolution, but also by the idealist evolutionist. Whether they favored a teleological or a reductionist biology, the idealists could not see the point of a theory that emphasized the irregularities and exceptions in the organic world. In the timeless real of idealist thinking, unchanging laws worked out an inevitable destiny. But Darwin taught his followers to look at living beings one by one. Thus prompted, they recognized, as if for the first time, the surprising fact of anomaly and the wisdom of an open-ended theory." (Glick, The Comparative Reception of Darwinism). "Darwin was not happy about the first German translation. It was done from the second English edition by H.G. Bronn, who had, at Darwin's suggestion, added an appendix of the difficulties which occurred to him" but he had also excised bits of which he did not approve. This edition also contains the historical sketch in its shorter and earlier form." (Freeman).Freeman No 672 - Freeman does not mention the lithographed plate.
