First Edition. Second edition (stated). First edition thus. This is in effect a new edition, necessitated by revisions and additions since the first edition of 1783. Prefaces for both editions are included. The book is a 4to of 232 pp. Per a UK dealer's pencil description on the front free endpaper "Quakers / Slaves & slavery pp. 176-180 / The meeting came out clearly in favour of abolition / Contemporary full calf expertly repaired along spine." Unfortunately the expert repairs did not hold up to the change in climate from the UK to the US, necessitating some further repair to tighten the upper part of the spine. The leather is supple and pleasant to the touch, and the paper of good quality. The edges of the boards are striated in gilt, a departure from Quaker severity. In addition to the discussion of slavery the section on the Women's Meetings (pp. 208-211) has been expanded from the previous edition, with material added covering the years 1791-1802. There is also as expected a section on War, with the Society holding fast to its pacifist convictions, and on Marriage, among many other topics.

The section on Marriage is annotated in ink at the end with over thirty lines of additional rules, from the Rhode Island meeting in June 1791; as is the section on Spirituous Liquors. The Section on "Negroes and Slaves" warns that Quakers must "avoid being any way concerned in reaping the unrighteous profits of that Iniquitous practice of dealing in Negroes, and other slaves; whereby, in the original purchase, one man selleth another as he does the beast that perishes, without any pretension to a property in him than that of superior force, in direct violation of the gospel rule."
