First Edition. Octavo. First edition in English. 268pp. In 1793, Pichegru was given command of 150,000 troops of the army of the North. By 1794 he launched an invasion of the Austrian Netherlands, capturing Amsterdam January, 1795. Pichegru was hailed as a savior of this country. He later began to turn against France's republican regime. In March 1796, he resigned his commission. He later sided with the Royalist deputies. Soon Pichegru was arrested and deported to French Guiana. He escaped and made his way to Germany, then on to England. He secretly entered France and began plotting to overthrow Bonaparte's military regime. He was arrested in Paris February 28. On April 5 he was found strangled. Bound in 3/4 red morocco over red cloth, raised bands with compartments decoratively stamped in gilt depicting an eagle and bee, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, from the library of Roy Hamilton Stephens with his armorial bookplate. A fine copy.
