In den WarenkorbFirst edition. First American edition of Melville's epic novel, in first issue binding and completely unrestored. In publisher's drab brown cloth with publisher's device stamped in blind, dark orange coated endpapers. xxiii, [i], 635, [1], [6 ads]. Very Good+, cloth worn at extremities and a little frayed at spine ends, a little bubbling and rubbing to cloth as well, gutters rubbed with two tiny wear spots along rear gutter. Name of contemporary former owner, Joseph A. Hill, written on paste down, title page, contents page, and half title. Front hinge a little free, contents show moderate foxing. A very nice copy. Housed in morocco pull-off slipcase. A difficult, linguistically-innovative fever dream of a novel, which has been hailed as America's greatest contribution to world literature. Uncommon in the original publisher's binding and without any restoration; a beautiful example. Followed the three-volume English edition by a month and contains thirty-five passages not present in that edition. In Grolier's One Hundred Influential American Books, the novel can best be described as containing "the sounds and scents, the very flavor, of the maritime life of our whaling ancestors." BAL 13664.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first issue binding, with the circular Harper's device of Melville's masterpiece. Octavo, original purple-brown cloth (BAL's A grain), covers stamped in blind with the publisher's circular device at the center within a heavy blind rule frame, original orange-coated endpapers. Of the 2,951 copies printed, 125 were review copies. About 1,500 sold in 11 days, but then sales slowed to less than 300 the next year. After two years copies of the first edition were still available, and almost 300 were destroyed in the 1853 fire of Harper's warehouse. In near fine condition with some of the usual light foxing and light shelfwear to the spine tips. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A completely unrestored example of this cornerstone. A superior example. Initially panned by critics and readers when published in 1851, "in the 20th century Moby Dick would be rediscovered and acknowledged as possibly the greatest of all American novels" (Chronology of American Literature). Arguably the greatest single work in American literature, Moby-Dick was initially âa complete practical failure, misunderstood by the critics and ignored by the public. Nevertheless, Melvilleâs permanent fame must always rest on the great prose epic of Moby-Dick, a book that has no equal in American literature for variety and splendor of style and for depth of feelingâ (DAB).

In den WarenkorbFirst American Edition; preceded slightly by the English edition, although this edition has numerous additions to that text. Publisher's green cloth; stamped in gilt and in blind; first binding, although this cataloguer has never seen either of the later two bindings in the wild. Some fading and wear; foxed (as seems inevitable); faded contemporary owner's inscription on the front free endpaper; bookplate of author and collector Carolyn Wells. The final 50 or so leaves are marginally waterstained at the lower corners, far from any text; bottom corners of the three advertising leaves slightly chipped, likewise not near any printing. Overall, a good copy of a book often found repaired, rebacked, restored or otherwise suffering from previous owners' good or bad intentions. In a custom quarter-morocco clamshell box (corners frayed). All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fine. Hardcover. One of 265 copies of which 250 copies were for sale. However, this spectacular copy is one of only five specially bound by the press in luxurious white leather. The owner of the press, Andrew Hoyem kept one copy and this copy was owned by a private collector. The whereabouts of the other three copies are unknown, and this special edition has never appeared on the market or at auction. This book has been described by William Everson as "a feat of craftsmanship unexcelled in modern printing," and named by the Grolier Club as one of the 100 most beautiful books of the twentieth century. According to the 24 page prospectus for the book, this was the sixth publication issued by the press, which is described by them as "one of the most elaborate printing ventures ever to be undertaken by an American press, and nothing will be spared in the effort to make it the finest of books." There is a several page description of the making of this magnificent edition. They write: "Despite many editions -perhaps because of its length - it has not been accorded the full typographical treatment that a classic of its stature deserves".in the early days of [the press] they considered the possibility of their printing a handset folio Moby Dick. It took ten years from the early discussions for the press to secure the capital for this long-planned venture. They go on to explain in detail the type and paper selection, followed by a section on the illustrations by the renowned artist Barry Moser of the Pennyroyal Press. It was decided from the inception of the project that there would be no dramatic or interpretive scenes that would imposed on the reader's imagination. Instead, the text would be interspersed with informative depictions of subjects mentioned by Melville. It took 14 months to print this folio copy of Moby Dick. Bound in full white leather with the illustrated image of a whale debossed on the front cover and titling to the spine. With beautiful blue endpapers. The text was set by hand in Goudy Modern, with initial letters printed in blue at the start of each of the 135 chapters in Leviathan Capitals, a special alphabet designed for the purpose by Charles Bigelow & Kris Holmes. Printed on Barcham Green's handmade paper, which is watermarked with the outline of a whale. Very light occasional foxing to fore-edges, not affecting the text pages. Housed in a custom box covered with gray cloth bearing a title label printed on the same white leather used on the special binding. Accompanied by the prospectus. In fine condition. Measures 10 x 15 x 3 inches. 577 pages. PRI/091924.

The US edition was the first to appear under the familiar title and contains 35 passages and the crucial epilogue omitted from the slightly earlier British edition. Moby-Dick was issued in London earlier the same year, set from the New York sheets and titled The Whale. Now universally acclaimed, at the time the novel was a "complete practical failure, misunderstood by the critics and ignored by the public; and in 1853 the Harpers' fire destroyed the plates of all his books and most of the copies remaining in stock" (DAB, vol. 12, p. 523). Copies in first issue bindings appear in black, blue, grey, green, purple-brown, red, and slate-coloured cloth, without any priority. As Sadleir notes, it was the custom of American publishers in the 1850s and 1860s to bind an edition in cloths of various colours, for the purpose of window display (see p. 221). BAL 13664; Grolier American 60; Johnson High Spots 57; Sadleir, Excursions in Victorian Bibliography, pp. 221 & 229. Octavo. With 6 pp. publisher's advertisements at rear. Original red cloth (BAL's "A" state), rebacked with part of the original spine laid down, spine lettered in gilt with decorative band in gilt at head and foot, thick one-line border and central publisher's life-buoy device to covers in blind, orange coated endpapers. Corners and extremities repaired, cloth a little marked but bright, endpapers darkened, light foxing to prelims and final blanks, otherwise clean. A very good copy.

This edition was technically preceded by the extremely rare English edition (Richard Bentley) two months earlier, but textually this is the far more important of the two, having been printed from Melville's manuscript, whereas the Bentley edition was set up from the sheets of the American edition. Furthermore, for political or editorial reasons, Bentley made some thirty-five unauthorized deletions from the original, and the American edition remains the standard text, never having been further revised. In den WarenkorbFirst US edition of Melville's masterpiece. It is the first edition published under Melville's preferred title, Moby-Dick, the first edition published in a single volume, and the first to include the crucial epilogue and 35 further passages which were omitted from the slightly earlier British edition. To protect his international copyright, Melville originally had the work published in London four weeks earlier, in a three-volume edition entitled The Whale. Now universally acclaimed, the novel was at first a "complete practical failure, misunderstood by the critics and ignored by the public; and in 1853 the Harpers' fire destroyed the plates of all his books and most of the copies remaining in stock" (DAB, vol. Whichever it is, now rediscovered, it stirs and stimulates each succeeding generation, whether reading it for pleasure or with a scalpel. Within its pages can be found the sound and scents, the very flavor, of the maritime life of our whaling ancestors" (Grolier). BAL 13664; Grolier American 100, 60; Johnson High Spots 57. Octavo (179 x 113 mm). Bound with publisher's 6-page adverts at end. Early 20th-century red half morocco, green spine label, central floral device in compartments gilt, raised bands tooled in gilt and ruled in blind, floral gilt roll on spine foot, sides and corners with blind dog-tooth roll, marbled sides and edges, brown endpapers. Blank upper margin of title page sometime restored, presumably owing to an excised ownership inscription, occasional marks to text, faint tide marks to margins throughout, small paper flaw to upper outer corner of pp. 269/70, closed tear to epilogue leaf sometime neatly repaired with tape. In den WarenkorbFirst Rockwell Kent edition, limited to 1,000 copies. This copy is additionally inscribed by Kent on the front free endpaper in pencil: "Inscribed to Mr Lessing Rosenthal by Rockwell Kent - December 5th 1930". It is also inscribed below, "William A. Kittredge: Printer". On the rear pastedown is pencilled, "11/28/30 R. R. Donnelly & Sons co. 3 vols subscription price". Lessing Rosenthal (1868-1949) was a lawyer, trustee of Johns Hopkins University, and member of the Bibliographical Society of America, the Caxton Club, and the Chicago Literary Society. His bequest bookplate for the University of Chicago, later stamped with a deaccession stamp, is on the front pastedown. The publisher approached Rockwell Kent (1882-1971) in 1926 to illustrate Richard Henry Dana's Two Years Before the Mast (1840). But Kent demurred, selecting instead Moby Dick (1851). He had complete creative control over his edition and "spent five years researching and designing his project, during which time he discovered many of the 19th-century textual and visual sources that had influenced Melville" (Abrams, p. 377). The result has not only been hailed among the great American illustrated books of the century, but it has also been credited with reviving public interest in a sublime but difficult novel. It was published in the press's Four American Books campaign, designed to rival the European book market. All copies sold by subscription before printing began. Grolier Fine Printed 100, 22. Matthew Jeffrey Abrams, "Illuminated Critique: The Kent Moby-Dick", Word & Image, vol. 33, no. 4, 2017. 3 vols, quarto. Profusely illustrated after pen-and-ink drawings, in the style of woodcuts, by Rockwell Kent. Original black cloth over bevelled boards, silver lettering and vignette on spines, front covers with abstract whale design and volume number within silver border, top edges black, others untrimmed. Housed in a white quarter morocco slipcase with wood-effect board sides, red morocco entry, and internal felt lining. Spines lightly toned, rubbing to cloth, short superficial split to vol. 3 front inner hinge, faint offsetting from bookplate and illustrations, the latter as usual. A near-fine set.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition in French, one of a very few copies printed. With headpiece after woodcut by Alexandre Noll and two plates. 512, [4], xx pp. 1 vols. 8vo. The first notice of Moby Dick in French dates from the first volume of the Revue des Deux Mondes (1853) but Melville's vast novel was not translated into French until the 1930s. Jean Giono (18951970) was deeply influenced by American writers of the nineteenth century, starting with Whitman. "The second great American Giono discovered (in the 1930s) was Melville translating Melville was a labor of love for years Giono would read him in the open fields" (Edmund White). He began his translation in 1936; Joan Smith worked up a first draft that was rewritten by Giono and her friend Lucien Jacques, publisher of the Cahiers du Contadour. The translation appeared in pre-publication serial form in numbers V-VIII of the Cahiers, (May 1938 to February 1939). The first edition was published in the first half of 1939 in a small print run (variously described as only thirty copies or 600 copies), here in a choice contemporary binding with the wrappers preserved. The outbreak of war put an end to the literary efforts of the Cahiers du Contadour and many copies were destroyed. Giono's translation gained wider distribution in the Gallimard reprint in May 1941. Giono's fictional reflections on Melville, Pour saluer Melville, were also published in 1941. RARE. Three volumes, 279, 284, and 282 pages. Contains 280 illustrations by Rockwell Kent. From the library of Robert Gordon Wasson (September 22, 1898 December 23, 1986) American author, ethnomycologist, and a Vice President for Public Relations at J.P. Morgan & Co. whose book plate is attached to the inside of the board of each volume. Possibly one of the more interesting characters of the 20th century but I digress. Includes the original aluminum slip case, lacking the original glassine dust jackets. Moderate to heavier stunning to the spines although the gilt remains in very good condition. There is some light rubbing to the boards and gilt some of which could likely be carefully wiped off but I never bothered. The bindings remain strong. For the most part this set looks very carefully read, if at all. The top stain on all three volumes remains a deep black. The text block is free of stunning or soiling. There is the expected mild to moderate offsetting from the incredible Rockwell Kent graphics but the graphics remain tack sharp, clean and unmarked. No other sunning, soiling, foxing or other flaws I can find. I rate the interiors of all three volumes at near fine. The original aluminum case has done its job over the nearly last 100 years and has some cleanable stuff on it which I never bothered over the years to take off. There is some moderate wear to the bottom of the spines particularly in volume 3. If you require any other information or photographs please feel free to contact me.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition Thus. Herman Melville's "Moby Dick or the White Whale". Very early printing from 1892 published by the United States Book Company, New York. The true first edition was published by Harper and Brothers in 1851. The book measures 4.5" x 7.25", 545 pages including Extracts. Ex-library. Re-cased in half cloth binding over marbled boards. Gold and black leather labels to the spine with raised bands and gold tooling. New endsheets. This book had previously been a library book with a library binding. Previous repairs had been made with tape, especially to the first few pages of text. There was some amateur sewing to the textblock, with the first and last few pages of text reattached crookedly. Library stamps and notations. A professional bookbinder was able to mend some of the tears to the textblock but was unable to remove the tape repairs as they would ruin the integrity of the pages. Moisture stains and soiling to the textblock with some small tears. Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store.
