Gr.-8°. [2] Bl., 280, 49 S. mit 2 gefalteten lithogr. Karten. Moderner Halblederband mit goldgepr. Rückenschild und Rückenvergoldung (typogr. Orig.-Umschlag beigebunden). PMM 339 (der vorliegende 1. Band). - "'The Piercing of the Isthmus of Suez' - he set out the whole case for the canal and his proposed method of building it. Construction was begun in 1859 and completed 10 years later" (Carter/Muir). - First edition of the report on the project of the important shipping canal in Egypt. Four more volumes were published up to 1860. - "The French consul general sent him (Lesseps) a number of books to combat his boredom, including a report written by J.-B. Lepère for Napoleon on the possibility of reopening the canal that once connected the Red Sea to the Mediterranean via the Nile. . De Lesseps was not dissuaded from his project by political or practical objections. But capital had to be raised to finance it. He explained the problems of the canal and its construction plan in a treatise entitled 'The Crossing of the Isthmus of Suez', almost three hundred pages long and complete with maps. Napoleon III assured him of his support and Lesseps raised a capital of two hundred million francs. Construction began in 1859 and was completed ten years later" (Carter/Muir). - On November 17, 1869, the Suez Canal was opened with a length of 164 km. The canal connects the port cities of Port Said and Port Taufiq near Suez and saves shipping between the North Atlantic and the Indian Ocean the route around Africa. - A very nice, decoratively bound copy.
