Period gift inscription from the year of publication to the title page of Vol. I.: "Mary Anne King given her by her mother April 1813." An exceptional example of this landmark work in English literature, rare and desirable bound in contemporary calf. Pride and Prejudice was written between October 1796 and August 1797 when Jane Austen was not yet twenty-one. In den WarenkorbFirst editions of all three volumes of Jane Austenâs masterpiece, her bestselling book during her lifetime which remains a landmark of English literature. 12mo, three volumes bound in full mottled calf with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine, double gilt ruling and botanical gilt scrolling to the front and rear panels, gilt turn-ins, all edges speckled black. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box with gilt titles and elaborate gilt tooling to the spine. A very attractive example of this significant work in English literature. Originally titled First Impressions, Pride and Prejudice was written between October 1796 and August 1797 when Jane Austen was not yet twenty-one, the same age, in fact, as her fictional heroine Elizabeth Bennet. After an early rejection by the publisher Cadell who had not even read it, Austen's novel was finally bought by Egerton in 1812 for £110. It was published in late January 1813 in a small edition of approximately 1500 copies and sold for 18 shillings in boards. âThe size of the edition is not known⦠perhaps 1500 copies⦠The first edition was sold off very rapidly and a second one was printed in the same yearâ (Keynes, 8). A novel of manners, the story follows the character development of young Elizabeth Bennet, an independent young lady who learns about the repercussions of hasty judgments and comes to appreciate the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness. âElizabethâs own energy and defiance of character respond to Rousseauâs and the popular notion of the pliant, submissive female. None of her novels delighted Jane Austen more than Pride and Prejudice⦠She had given a rare example of fiction as a highly intelligent form⦠This remains her most popular and widely translated novelâ (Honan, 313-20). Pride and Prejudice has consistently appeared near the top of lists of "most-loved books" among literary scholars and the reading public. It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature, with over 20 million copies sold, and has inspired many derivatives in modern literature. For more than a century, dramatic adaptations, reprints, unofficial sequels, films, and televised versions of Pride and Prejudice have portrayed the memorable characters and themes of the novel, reaching mass audiences. The most popular film adaptations include the 1995 BBC television adaptation starring Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet and the 2005 film directed by Joe Wright and starring Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy. In very good condition. Title page of Vol. I supplied in facsimile and pages [1]-4 re-inserted and tipped in.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. London: Richard Bentley, 1833. COLLECTED EDITION. Five volumes, octavo (160 x 100 mm) An attractive set, no half titles, engraved frontispiece in each volume. Bound in publishers contemporary polished tan calf, covers gilt ruled; rebacked, preserving most of the original double labels, with marbled end papers, with the spines fully gilt S&S and P&P have an ex-libris bookplate, P&P has some news cuttings attached to the final blank. Emma has a stain on the frontis and title page possibly caused by the leaving an insert. Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey also have an ex-libris. Contents are clean, no paper tear, tears or loss. The calf bindings have some marks, the end papers are whole. The Bentley editions of Austen's novels were issued both separately, and afterwards collectively with a substituted title page reading "The Novels by Miss Jane Austen. Complete in Five volumes". Gilson cites contemporary notes in the Athenaeum implying publication of the separate issue of Mansfield Park in April 1833 and the collective issue from October 1833. Copies from the collective issue are much less commonly encountered than those of the separate issues, Gilson calling them "very rare in any state". Issued by Bentley beginning in 1833, this one with the frontis and all five printed title-pages dated 1833, but with the part-title at p. [213] of the last volume, for Persuasion, dated 1851. Sadleir writes it may be of interest to note that Bentley advertised this Collected Edition in the Athenaeum of October 1833, as . as neatly bound for the library so as to range with the Scott s novels, Miss Edgeworth s novels, Byron s work , etc price 30s. - see Sadleir X1X Century p105. I have a set of Edgeworth in the same calf and the spines have the same gilt design, there is also an identical set with spine decorations, and calf boards, of Walter Scott s for sale elsewhere. The present set is therefore one of the Austen rare publishers neatly bound library sets. A very similar set owned by Charlton Heston sold at Bonhams in March 2016 and was also sold without the printed half titles and engraved titles. WorldCat states three copies.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very good. First Edition. First Edition. Hardcover. Celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen with this iconic 1894 first "Peacock Edition" of her most beloved novel, Pride and Prejudice, joined here by her sisters Emma (1898) and Sense and Sensibility (1899), all three in George Allen's richly illustrated gift editions, beautifully bound in their original deep green, gilt-decorated cloth. Though minimally illustrated editions had appeared before Hugh Thomson's glorious Peacock Edition alighted upon the scene, with 160 lavish, integrated illustrations by the artist who inaugurated the Cranford School of Illustration, this first printing is considered the first fully illustrated edition of Pride and Prejudice. Also published by George Allen in the years following the Peacock Edition's profound success, these first printings thus of both Emma and Sense and Sensibility come beautifully designed and fully illustrated by a fellow Cranford School artist, Chris (Christiana Mary Demain) Hammond (1860-1900). United on the quarter-millennial anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest writers in the English language, these three beautifully bound and fully illustrated 19th century editions of Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility are certain to inspire only the most ardent admiration and love on any bookshelf they grace. Pride and Prejudice, 1894 first printing thus: 7 3/8" X 5". xxvii, 476pp. Bound in deep green cloth over boards, with Hugh Thomson's iconic peacock, perched on its sundial pedestal, fanning its glorious feathers across upper board and spine in bright gilt, lettered in kind. Moderate wear to binding, with slight lean to spine, gentle rubbing to edge of spine, bumping to extremities, bottom corners split, small neat tears to head and tail of spine, and presumed ink stain measuring about 2 1/4" X 1 1/2" near bottom corner of rear board. All edges gilt. Deep green coated endpapers. Bookseller's ticket of F. Bedford of Bradford to front pastedown. Hint of wear to inner hinge; binding is firm and sound. Name of John Sowden pencilled to flyleaf. Gentle age-toning to pages, else clean and unmarked. Illustrated throughout 160 pen-and-ink drawings by Hugh Thomson, including vignettes, headpieces, tailpieces, ornamental initials, and a tissue-guarded frontispiece of Elizabeth at her writing desk, reading Jane's letters while at Hunsford Parsonage, right before Mr. Darcy's ill-fated first proposal. Includes a preface by George Saintsbury. A single page from a presumably quite old bookseller's catalogue offering this title laid in. Emma, 1898 first printing thus: 7 3/4" X 5 3/8". xxvi, 504pp. Bound in deep green cloth over boards, with Chris Hammond's blocked floral design in gilt to upper board and spine, with typography matching its Pride and Prejudice predecessor in gilt. Unlike Pride and Prejudice, only its top edge is gilt, with its foreedge deckled. Somewhat harder wear to binding, with pronounced lean to spine, some rubbing and dimming to gilt decorations, and scattered surface wear to cloth. Front hinge tender, and occasional hint of spine at center of text block; binding remains quite firm and sound. Piano-themed photographic bookplate of Elsie Jollyman to front pastedown; Jollyman was born in 1878 to a London tobacco manufacturer, and her illustrated 1909 journal of "A Caravan Tour in the Highlands" is held in the Archives of the National Library of Scotland. Foxing to endpapers. Pages are clean and unmarked. Illustrated in 86 charming line drawings by Chris Hammond throughout. Includes an introduction by Joseph Jacobs. Sense and Sensibility, 1899 first printing thus: 7 3/8" X 5". xxviii, 389pp. Bound in deep green cloth over boards, with Chris Hammond's floral design in gilt to upper board and spine, with matching typography in kind. Moderate wear to binding, with slight lean to spine, small splits to bumped corners, small neat tears to head and tail of spine, and light scattered rubbing. Top edge gilt. Spot of.

A relative unknown illustrator Hugh Thompson was an Irish Illustrator born at Coleraine near Derry. he took the task of creating 160 line drawings to produce the first and still finest illustrated edition. The success of George Allens " PEACOCK EDITION " launched Thompson's career as as a first class and prominent illustrator who is best known for his pen-and-ink illustrations of works by authors Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie. In total, Thomson illustrated sixty-five books and contributed a large number of illustrations to magazines and other periodicals. When working on a new illustration, Thomson would research his subject in the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. He would often take detailed notes on costumes, furniture, old prints, and architectural records. His attention to detail can been seen in his sketchbooks, which include pages devoted to the changing styles of ladies and gentleman attire. Jane Austen born 16 December 1775 died 18 July 1817 was an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels, which interpret, critique and comment upon the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's novels remained in obscurity until this 1894 first illustrated edition was published. 61 different publishers reprinted her titles up to 2010 before the explosion of electronic reprint companies. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: very good +. Limited Edition. Large octavo, 5 volumes, complete as published (two volumes of Austen's letters were issued nearly a decade later, and are sometimes offered together with this set). One of 1,000 limited sets, 950 of which were offered for sale. An exceptionally beautiful example of this notoriously fragile set, bound in the publisher's marbled boards with blue-ish cloth spines and printed spine labels; evocative of a Regency-period publisher's binding. Spines gently and evenly sunned, but a fine set, with handsome 20th century bookplates to each front paste-down. In the rare original dust jackets, somewhat darkened on the spines, and some with small stains and edge chips, but still at least very good. Aside form the many sets which were quickly bound up in leather, one surmises that surviving sets in the publisher's binding often had their jackets thrown away, as the bindings are more attractive. Each volume contains a bound-in replacement spine label at the rear, as issed. A superior, un-fooled-around-with example.

In very good condition with some rubbing to the extremities, spine, and rear panel, light toning and minor offsetting to the pictorial title, and antiquarian ownership signature to the front flyleaf. Reprints ofÂBentley's standard novels are scarce. "So few of these reprints survive in libraries, and even fewer in original condition." (Gilson p. 225). After many publishing delays, Austen decided to self-finance the publication of Emma, paying printer John Murray a 10% commission and retaining the remaining profits. "Emma was the fourth and last novel which Jane Austen published in her lifetime. When it was written the author was at the height of her powers, and she wrote the book rapidly and surely, encouraged by the success of her previous novels to express herself with confidence in the way peculiarly her own" (Rosenbach 29:24). "Jane Austen's fourth novel has a profundity similar to that of Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility, only more elusive since Emma's character is far more subtle than Elizabeth or Marianne's⦠Austen's self-knowledge, her love of detail⦠[helped her] to create a proud, self-willed, self-guided, vexing and outrageous Emma and her greatest novel" (Honan, Jane Austen, 356-364). The novel has been adapted into several films, televised programs, and plays including the 1996 period film of the same name starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Alan Cumming, Toni Collette, Ewan McGregor, and Jeremy Northam.

Jane Austen December 16,1775 - July 18, 1817 was an English novelist whose works of romantic fiction, set among the landed gentry, earned her a place as one of the most widely read writers in English literature. Her realism, biting irony and social commentary as well as her acclaimed plots have gained her historical importance among scholars and critics. Austen's works critique the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th century realism. Her plots, though fundamentally comic, highlight the dependence of women on marriage to secure social standing and economic security. Her works, though usually popular, were first published anonymously and brought her little personal fame and only a few positive reviews during her lifetime.

In den WarenkorbFirst Trade edition. Thomson, Hugh. First Trade edition. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson with the plates on Tissue and tipped in. xxvii, [1], 476, [1] pp. Printed at the Chiswick Press. 1 vols. 4to. In the late 1880's and through the 90's, a remarkable illustrator made his appearance on the London scene: Hugh Thomson (1860-1920), perhaps the pre-eminent representative of what has come to be known as 'the Wig and Powder School' of English illustration. Thomson's delicate pen drawings of English life lent themselves perfectly to the new technique of photo-engraving (he was a pioneeer of the genre) and he was soon in popular demand for illustrations of the novels of Jane Austen, Fanny burney, Mrs. Gaskell, Charles Reade, as well as for contemporaries like Austin Dobson. His influence on contemporary illustrators was felt keenly for many years, and can be seen in the work of Charles E. Brock and others of the 'school.'. Red polished calf, all edges gilt. Front hinge starting. Iconic Hugh Thompson cloth binding bound in at rear. Contemporary gift inscription to endpaper Illustrated by Hugh Thomson with the plates on Tissue and tipped in. xxvii, [1], 476, [1] pp. Printed at the Chiswick Press. 1 vols. 4to.
