Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. No Jacket. Hugh Thomson (illustrator). The sought-after 'peacock edition' with Thomson's illustrations within, and elaborate gilt decoration to upper board and spine. Stock is toned, with occasional spotting, heavier to first and last few pages. Former owner's name - Catherine Herbert Fullerton, Xmas 1894 - neatly to half title. Light creasing to a few pages within preface. Rear endpapers are split and binding is lightly shaken with some opening between gatherings. Gilt to all edges of block. Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. First Edition. First Edition. Hardcover. Celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen with this iconic 1894 first "Peacock Edition" of her most beloved novel, Pride and Prejudice, joined here by her sisters Emma (1898) and Sense and Sensibility (1899), all three in George Allen's richly illustrated gift editions, beautifully bound in their original deep green, gilt-decorated cloth. Though minimally illustrated editions had appeared before Hugh Thomson's glorious Peacock Edition alighted upon the scene, with 160 lavish, integrated illustrations by the artist who inaugurated the Cranford School of Illustration, this first printing is considered the first fully illustrated edition of Pride and Prejudice. Also published by George Allen in the years following the Peacock Edition's profound success, these first printings thus of both Emma and Sense and Sensibility come beautifully designed and fully illustrated by a fellow Cranford School artist, Chris (Christiana Mary Demain) Hammond (1860-1900). United on the quarter-millennial anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest writers in the English language, these three beautifully bound and fully illustrated 19th century editions of Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility are certain to inspire only the most ardent admiration and love on any bookshelf they grace. Pride and Prejudice, 1894 first printing thus: 7 3/8" X 5". xxvii, 476pp. Bound in deep green cloth over boards, with Hugh Thomson's iconic peacock, perched on its sundial pedestal, fanning its glorious feathers across upper board and spine in bright gilt, lettered in kind. Moderate wear to binding, with slight lean to spine, gentle rubbing to edge of spine, bumping to extremities, bottom corners split, small neat tears to head and tail of spine, and presumed ink stain measuring about 2 1/4" X 1 1/2" near bottom corner of rear board. All edges gilt. Deep green coated endpapers. Bookseller's ticket of F. Bedford of Bradford to front pastedown. Hint of wear to inner hinge; binding is firm and sound. Name of John Sowden pencilled to flyleaf. Gentle age-toning to pages, else clean and unmarked. Illustrated throughout 160 pen-and-ink drawings by Hugh Thomson, including vignettes, headpieces, tailpieces, ornamental initials, and a tissue-guarded frontispiece of Elizabeth at her writing desk, reading Jane's letters while at Hunsford Parsonage, right before Mr. Darcy's ill-fated first proposal. Includes a preface by George Saintsbury. A single page from a presumably quite old bookseller's catalogue offering this title laid in. Emma, 1898 first printing thus: 7 3/4" X 5 3/8". xxvi, 504pp. Bound in deep green cloth over boards, with Chris Hammond's blocked floral design in gilt to upper board and spine, with typography matching its Pride and Prejudice predecessor in gilt. Unlike Pride and Prejudice, only its top edge is gilt, with its foreedge deckled. Somewhat harder wear to binding, with pronounced lean to spine, some rubbing and dimming to gilt decorations, and scattered surface wear to cloth. Front hinge tender, and occasional hint of spine at center of text block; binding remains quite firm and sound. Piano-themed photographic bookplate of Elsie Jollyman to front pastedown; Jollyman was born in 1878 to a London tobacco manufacturer, and her illustrated 1909 journal of "A Caravan Tour in the Highlands" is held in the Archives of the National Library of Scotland. Foxing to endpapers. Pages are clean and unmarked. Illustrated in 86 charming line drawings by Chris Hammond throughout. Includes an introduction by Joseph Jacobs. Sense and Sensibility, 1899 first printing thus: 7 3/8" X 5". xxviii, 389pp. Bound in deep green cloth over boards, with Chris Hammond's floral design in gilt to upper board and spine, with matching typography in kind. Moderate wear to binding, with slight lean to spine, small splits to bumped corners, small neat tears to head and tail of spine, and light scattered rubbing. Top edge gilt. Spot of rubbing to fore-edge. Binding is firm and sound. Toning to endpapers. Pages are clean and unmarked. Illustrated throughout in 64 fine line drawings by Chris Hammond. Includes an introduction by Joseph Jacobs.

A relative unknown illustrator Hugh Thomson was an Irish Illustrator born at Coleraine near Derry. he took the task of creating 160 line drawings to produce the first and still finest illustrated edition. The success of George Allens " PEACOCK EDITION " launched Thompson's career as as a first class and prominent illustrator who is best known for his pen-and-ink illustrations of works by authors Charles Dickens, and J. M. Barrie. In total, Thomson illustrated sixty-five books and contributed a large number of illustrations to magazines and other periodicals. When working on a new illustration, Thomson would research his subject in the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. He would often take detailed notes on costumes, furniture, old prints, and architectural records. His attention to detail can been seen in his sketchbooks, which include pages devoted to the changing styles of ladies and gentleman attire. Jane Austen born 16 December 1775 died 18 July 1817 was an English novelist known primarily for her six major novels, which interpret, critique and comment upon the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's novels remained in obscurity until this 1894 first illustrated edition was published. 61 different publishers reprinted her titles up to 2010 before the explosion of electronic reprint companies. First Trade edition. Thomson, Hugh. First Trade edition. Illustrated by Hugh Thomson with the plates on Tissue and tipped in. xxvii, [1], 476, [1] pp. Printed at the Chiswick Press. 1 vols. 4to. In the late 1880's and through the 90's, a remarkable illustrator made his appearance on the London scene: Hugh Thomson (1860-1920), perhaps the pre-eminent representative of what has come to be known as 'the Wig and Powder School' of English illustration. Thomson's delicate pen drawings of English life lent themselves perfectly to the new technique of photo-engraving (he was a pioneeer of the genre) and he was soon in popular demand for illustrations of the novels of Jane Austen, Fanny burney, Mrs. Gaskell, Charles Reade, as well as for contemporaries like Austin Dobson. His influence on contemporary illustrators was felt keenly for many years, and can be seen in the work of Charles E. Brock and others of the 'school.'. Red polished calf, all edges gilt. Front hinge starting. Iconic Hugh Thompson cloth binding bound in at rear. Contemporary gift inscription to endpaper Illustrated by Hugh Thomson with the plates on Tissue and tipped in. xxvii, [1], 476, [1] pp. Printed at the Chiswick Press. 1 vols. 4to.

London George Allen 1894. First thus of the 'Peacock Edition' - 12 x 18.5 cm. 476pp, with tissue-guarded frontispiece and 160 line drawn illustrations by Hugh Thomson. Some wear to the spine ends and corners and to the edges - neat name and contemporary date to the rear of the endpaper. Small stain to the top edge. Gilt is exceptionally vibrant to the front panel - less so to the spine - complete in the original rich blue/green cloth. Gilt to the page edges is exceptionally bright and complete. This exquisite 'Peacock' edition of Jane Austen's beloved novel is widely hailed as the most splendidly illustrated interpretation of her work. Encased in a luxurious pictorial gilt binding from its period, this edition stands as a testament to aesthetic finesse. The illustrations, meticulously crafted by Hugh Thomson, a renowned book illustrator from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, are considered timeless classics in the realm of Austen literature. Thomson's dedication to precision is evident in his extensive research, often spending hours in museums to capture the accurate lifestyles and attire of the characters he depicted. His artistic journey for "Pride and Prejudice" commenced in 1893 and met with tremendous success, selling over 10,000 copies within just a few years of its release. This achievement marked the beginning of Thomson's illustrious career as he went on to illustrate several more of Austen's cherished novels.
