Pierson die Gedichtsammlung "Romantische Lieder". Hesse hatte sich mit 175 Mark an den Herstellungskosten beteiligt. Die Auflage betrug 600 Exemplare, wovon bis zum Januar 1900 aber erst 54 verkauft wurden. Die Gedichte entstanden in den Jahren 1897 und 1898. Nach der Zusammenstellung vergingen nur wenige Wochen bis zur Drucklegung. "Wie wichtig schien mir im Herbst 1899 dieses kleine Büchlein als ich das erste Exemplar meines ersten Buches in der Hand hielt!
