Bucurest?i (Bucharest): self-published (Studio grafic "Steaua Artei"), 1932. Quarto (32 × 23.8 cm). Original printed self-wrappers; [8] pp. Old horizontal crease; light overall wear; trace of (mailing?) label to first leaf; some tearing to fold; still good to very good. Published from 1928 to 1932, first at Dorohoi and beginning with no. 10 in Bucharest, UNU was among the most important Romanian avant-garde journals. This issue contains articles on legal proceedings against the UNU group, poems by Sasa? Pana?, Stephan Roll, I. Wittner, Mihail Dan, texts by Gheorghe Dinu, Geo Bogza (a long poem with edits in pencil, quite possibly by the author himself), and an article by Pana? With reproductions of works by M. H. Maxy and S. Perahim.UNU positioned itself against the "Contimporanul" group and its eponymous journal, which appeared from 1922 to 1933. "Representing a somewhat younger generation of Romanian-born avant-gardists, unu was taking a turn towards Surrealism, leaving Constructivism to architects and 'claiming a stance completely torn from reality'. a creativity that basked in dreams and 'semitrezie' (half-sleep)." UNU was also more distinctly leftist in orientation, aligning itself with André Breton, although it had to tread lightly in order to avoid legal repercussions, and most political statements are carefully veiled on the pages of the journal (The Oxford Critical and Cultural History of Modernist Magazines, vol. 3, p. 1181).Rare; as of September 2021, KVK and OCLC show holdings at the British Library (just six issues), Yale, Iowa (just two issues), and the Getty.
