Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: f to g. First edition (?). Folio. [12]pp (Index). 521, [25]pp (Index). Original soft vellum, with contemporary handwritten title in ink on spine. Title page in red and black lettering. Large 4 1/2 x 5 1/2" engraved vignette on title. Rare edition of Tommaso Tamburini's work on Ecclesiastical Censures; Christian ethics; Contracts (Canon law); Crusade bulls and Irregularities (Canon law), representing the new standards of Christian jurisprudence. Tamburini* was a renown Italian Jesuit who taught moral theology since 1636. Though severe towards himself, the Jesuit theologian, when deciding cases of conscience for others, was inclined to follow the milder views. This is the basis of the accusation of laxity frequently brought against him, and which led to his famous controversy with Vincent Baron, a French Dominican theologian and preacher. Tamburini published a rejection of the attacks of his adversary under the title, "Germana Doctrina" which is featured at the end of this volume. Vellum age-toned and rippled, with front joint partly chipped. 3 1/2" closed tear to title. Lower corner of the first 38 pages chipped (slightly affecting lettering). Sporadic and light water-staining along fore-edge and throughout. Some creasing to corners. Book block partly detached. Text in Latin. Binding in overall fair, interior in fair (first 38 and last 30 pages) to good condition. * Tommaso Tamburini (1591-1675) was an Italian Jesuit moral theologian. He was born at Caltanisetta in Sicily, and entered the Society of Jesus at the age of fifteen; there he became distinguished for a talent for teaching. After a successful course of studies he held the professorship of philosophy four years, of dogmatic theology seven years, of moral theology seventeen years, and during thirteen years was rector of various colleges.
